Back: WHY THIS BOOK?
My story has two sides
It didn’t start with dance. It started with attention. A little boy goes completely still. Not from fear – but from what he sees. At a mannequin show, a man from the USA glides backwards while it looks as if he is walking forwards. How is that possible? That question never let go. Not as a trick, but as a riddle.
My story has two sides. It is not the dance that has two sides – dance is dance. But the path I walked has sides.
FREDRIK OTTERBECH

A book about the spark that becomes a passion – and the culture we create together.

Starting from his own path through dance, Fredrik Otterbech explores where the drive begins, how attention sparks an interest, and how it can grow into a life’s work. The book is for the cultural sector, dancers, educators and cultural workers, and for parents and young people who want to protect the joy of creating, even when they meet resistance. The book also shows what hip hop is: DJing, MCing/rap, breaking and graffiti. You can represent one or more of the elements, and together they become hip-hop culture.

What does “course links” mean?

The digital edition has links to Fredrik’s instructional videos on the YouTube channel Fredrik Otterbech Kulturspiren, so you can watch the movements while you read. Some videos are already online:

More videos will be posted over time, and the links will go into the book once they are published. It is not a finished course, but links to the videos as they come out.

What the book offers beyond the videos

The videos show the movements. The book tells why: a professional and personal reflection on how instinct becomes conscious work, and on the power of attention – from the living room in the 1970s and Park Hotell in 1984, via the schoolyard, Torget and the ballet studio, to the dance studio today. Each chapter has its own place, time and theme, with a common thread running through the whole book.

The manuscript is a work in progress, so chapters and content may change. Whether the book will include exercises has not been decided yet. The manuscript is being written in Norwegian. The digital edition is planned in Norwegian and English, and will be delivered when the book is published.

Printed book

The printed book is a little cheaper (NOK 349, NOK 399 after launch), but it may take a little longer, because it goes through a publisher before it is printed.
