Breaking already has a place in French schools

Hip-hop dance, which includes breaking, is part of French PE (EPS). In collège it belongs to the learning field "expressing yourself in front of others through an artistic and/or acrobatic performance". In lycée it belongs to "producing a physical performance to be seen and appreciated by others" (éduscol, French Ministry of Education).

Breaking has been recognised as a high-level sport in France since 2019 and sits under the Fédération française de danse. For primary schools, Usep created the "Break s'cool" resource for ages 6–9, built on the third EPS learning field for cycle 2 (Usep).

This pack gives you a short, concrete unit for getting started within that framework.

What your pupils gain

  • Movement skills: footwork, core strength, balance and rhythm through basic steps.
  • Expression: pupils show a short sequence to the group in the circle, called the "cypher".
  • Working together: the cypher is built on taking turns and respecting whoever is dancing.
  • Culture: a way into hip-hop culture, which many young people relate to.

What's included

  • The guide "Breaking step by step" (PDF).
  • A PDF with 4 sessions of 45 minutes: warm-up, basic steps, cypher and cool-down.
  • Goals for each session and safety rules.
  • Page references to the guide, so you can find each move quickly.
  • A licence for one school or one organisation, free to copy internally.

French and English versions of the guide and the 4 sessions are included.

Digital product: download after purchase, nothing is shipped.

How it fits a session (séance) or a unit (cycle)

In EPS

  • The 4 sessions form an introductory module. Use it to open a dance unit or as a short unit on its own.
  • Every session follows the same structure: warm-up, basic steps, cypher, cool-down.
  • If your lesson is longer than 45 minutes, extend the practice time or the cypher presentations.
  • You can rotate roles during the cypher (dancer, audience, observer) to link with the EPS learning field.

In périscolaire

  • One 45-minute workshop a week for 4 weeks, with simple needs: space, music and a suitable floor.
  • The leader doesn't need to dance: the guide explains each move step by step.
  • The licence covers your organisation, so you can print the sheets for the whole team.
