A child's first breaking round in 2 weeks – safely at home, 15 minutes a day.

“Breaking for new generations” is a digital booklet (PDF, 8 pages) for children and teens aged about 8 to 16, and for parents and teachers who want to help them get started. No experience needed – just a little floor space, music and a soft surface.

Breaking started in hip hop culture in New York in the 1970s. Today it is danced all over the world, and it has even been part of the Olympics.

What you get in the booklet:

  • the elements of hip hop culture and the values of breaking: respect, cypher, creativity and patience
  • the four building blocks: toprock, footwork/downrock, freezes and power moves
  • steps you can practise at home: crossstep, indian step, kick step, three-step, six-step, CC's, baby freeze, chair freeze and turtle prep (balance only)
  • “Safety first” with warm-up, soft surfaces and advice to wait with power moves until you have a teacher
  • a two-week practice plan, 15–20 minutes a day, ending with your first full round
  • advice for parents and teachers
  • real photos of the author from his breaking days in the mid-1980s
